Major Announcement: Brock Lesnar out of UFC 131 Fight with Junior Dos Santos

brock lesnar 300x300 Major Announcement: Brock Lesnar out of UFC 131 Fight with Junior Dos SantosToday the UFC held conference call on short notice to make what they labeled as “A Major Announcement”. When UFC President Dana White took to the phone he made it clear this wasn’t a “good news” announcement.

The former UFC Heavyweight champion and current coach on “The Ultimate Fighter” Brock Lesnar has had a recurrence of his diverticulitis that almost ended his fighting career just two years ago. After being at the Mayo Clinic for nearly 14 hours yesterday and talking with the UFC Lesnar has withdrawn from his fight with Junior Dos Santos.

“I wouldn’t be 100% for the fight so I wanted to give the UFC enough time to a proper change,” said Lesnar.

Lesnar said the symptoms reappeared three weeks ago and he started on antibiotics right away, unfortunately they weren’t working so he started another round. “Being tired of being tired,” as Lesnar put it he is now faced with some very tough decisions to which he currently has now answers too.

Lesnar has one of two choices now, either have the surgery that he almost had the first time or continue to battle / manage the symptoms. With Lesnar pushing himself to the limit in training he makes himself more likely to have these recurrences. The diverticulitis causes abdominal pain and runs down his immune system making it harder to recover from training, something that was forcing Lesnar to take days off during his training camps.

Carwin will now face Dos Santos at UFC 131

Stepping in for Lesnar will be the man he beat following his first bout with the illness, Shane Carwin. The former interim heavyweight champion will move up the UFC 131 (originally schedule to face Jon Olav Einemo) and face Dos Santos in the nights main event. Jon Olav Einemo will remain on the card but his opponent has yet to be determined.

Sad news for Lesnar who was looking forward to returning to the top of the UFC heavyweight division but his health is the most important thing. Lesnar made one thing clear though in the conference call, “I’m not retiring; this isn’t the end of Brock Lesnar!”
