Tachi Palace Fights 10: A bad Night for Joe Soto

The night didn’t go nearly as planned for Joe Soto tonight at Tachi Palace Fights 10 in Lemoore, California. The Inaugural Bellator season one winner and first ever Bellator Featherweight champion fought Eddie Yagin for the vacant Tachi Palace Fights featherweight title in the night’s co-main event.

Soto entered the fight coming off an 11-month layoff due to a detached retina he suffered at Bellator 27, a fight where he also lost his featherweight title to Joe Warren via TKO. Taking the fight on short notice, Soto was potentially risking his spot in the season five Bellator bantamweight tournament. A risk he likely will now regret.

The underdog in the fight, Yagin rocked Soto early on in the opening round that would set the tone for the next minute of the fight. Clearly hurt from the heavy strike, Soto was in survival mode and trying everything and anything to secure a takedown. Yagin defended the takedown attempt perfectly and waited for the opening to come from the scrambling Soto. At the two-minute mark Soto gave Yagin that opening the Hawaiian was looking for and he quickly locked in the Guillotine that ended the fight.

The biggest win for Eddie Yagin was easily the biggest loss for Joe Soto. Not only has he now lost back to back fights (both title shots) but he probably lost his spot in the Bellator Bantamweight tournament. There has been no official word from Bellator or Bjorn Rebney regarding Joe Soto’s tournament spot, but with only 8 spots available the writing is on the wall.

For Yagin, he’ll now make his first title defense of his Tachi Palace fights featherweight title against former champion Issac De Jesus.

The nights nine bout fight card was streamed on Sherdog and unfortunately it was once again hit or miss, so if you missed any of the nights action here are the complete TPF 10 results.
