Jon Jones MMAAnd still UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones! Were the words out of the mouth of the UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer following the UFC 165 main event between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.

The champ was taken to the limit by the challenger and the outcome of their grueling five round war was anyone’s guess as the judges’ scorecards were being tabulated. Both fighters were battered, bloody and extremely tired as they waited for the winner to be announced.

As the hand of the champion was being raised you couldn’t help but notice the look of relief of the face of Jon Jones. Not only did he retain the title in his toughest test to date but he also put himself in the UFC record books with his sixth successful light heavyweight title defense, passing the hall of famer Tito Ortiz.

The instant classic could have gone either way but it went the way of Jon Jones tonight. In a fight this close it’s hard not to pull for the underdog but I tend to lean on the motto of “you must beat the champ to become the champ” and while Gustafsson did beat up Jon Jones he did not “beat” him.

The smoke is still settling from UFC 165 but all signs are pointing to these two doing again.
