Last night’s UFC 153 was another successful event held in Brazil. The fighters put on an entertaining night for the fans and of the 12 fights on the UFC 153 fight card, nine of them saw a Brazilian bring home the Victory.
MMA legends and fellow Brazilians Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira stepped in on short notice following injuries to Jose Aldo and Rampage Jackson and closed the night out with two great finishes. Their performances were each worthy of a Fight Night Bonus but they had plenty of competition from the rest of the fighters on the UFC 153 card.
The winners of the Fight Night Bonuses each received $70,000.
Fight of the Night: Jon Fitch vs. Erik Silva
He said he was going to fight for the “Fight of the Night” and Jon Fitch did just that. Fitch used his relentless wrestling to control the fight, but did so at a frantic pace that Erik Silva could not match. Silva had his chance in the second round as he had Fitch in a deep choke. Fitch proved very difficult to submit and survived to completely dominate in the third round. Fitch looked very good after the long layoff and defeated Silva by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
Submission of the Night: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Dave Herman said he didn’t believe in BJJ and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira made him a believer with his first round armbar. Nogueira hadn’t fought in 11 months and looked out of shape but the Brazilian brought the house down by forcing Herman to tap.
Nogueira took the fight on four week’s notice, which might have influenced the decision for a “Submission of the Night” nod. Demain Maia looked impressive in his second welterweight fight against Rick Story and made a great case for the bonus with a first round submission of his own.
Knockout of the Night: Rony Jason
Sam Sicilia was throwing wild haymakers at Rony Jason throughout the fight but in doing so had his hands down and not defending. That allowed Rony Jason to land at will and drop Sicilia with a big right hand and clean things up with some ground and pound.
